Overview

The EOS C50 camera is designed to maximize creative freedom. The compact, full-featured camera body includes Canon's newly developed 7K full frame CMOS sensor with 3:2 open gate internal recording capabilities, 4K/120P and Cinema RAW Light up to 7K/60P. The EOS C50 features Canon’s next-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, simultaneous 2K crop recording, built-in Frame.io Camera-to-Cloud integration, and supports XC protocol which allows for remote control over IP via Wi-Fi® or a compatible third-party USB-C ethernet adapter. The included detachable top handle adds two full-size XLR audio inputs, a start-stop button, and a zoom rocker. In addition, this camera can capture 32MP still images in Photo mode. The EOS C50 seamlessly integrates into almost any production environment, delivering flexibility and outstanding image quality in a package that practically fits in the palm of your hand.

Features

Newly Developed 7K Full Frame CMOS Sensor

The features that make this lens approachable are hiding right in plain sight. Carrying a lens capable of reaching 300mm usually means a big, heavy lens that is not easy to always have with you, but through our years of expertise with lenses, we have been able to produce a compact, lightweight, and portable option about the weight of a 500ml water bottle that won’t break the bank.

Full Frame 3:2 “Open Gate” Sensor Mode

The EOS C50 is the first Cinema EOS camera to feature open gate recording options, utilizing the full dimensions of the sensor. By selecting Full Frame 3:2 from the Sensor Mode section of the main menu, you can shoot using the full area of the sensor and then use that information in post to crop and re-frame your footage to the aspect ratio of your choice. This is especially valuable when shooting with full-frame anamorphic lenses.

Support for Anamorphic Lens Desqueeze

Anamorphic lenses have an elongated rear element that makes it possible to utilize flare and bokeh effects that cannot be achieved with ordinary lenses. The EOS C50 provides desqueeze magnification options including OFF/2x/1.8x/1.5x/1.3x.

Dual Base ISO

The full-frame 7K sensor of the EOS C50 offers dual base ISO, which allows the camera to deliver stunning imagery in a wide range of lighting conditions. With base ISOs of 800 and 6400 in Canon Log 2, you will be able to maximize the full dynamic range of the sensor in almost any shooting scenario. The camera also features Auto Selection, which automatically switches from one of the two base ISO levels to another level while maintaining the dynamic range.

7K 60P Internal RAW Recording and 4K 120P High Frame Rate Recording

The EOS C50 can record up to 7K 60P Cinema RAW Light with an additional three 12-bit Cinema RAW Light recording modes: HQ, ST and LT.

Other recording options include our standard XF-AVC codec which can record in 10-bit 4:2:2, creating rich detail and smooth imagery at frame rates up to 120P, without cropping the image from the sensor. For slow or fast motion recording, the EOS C50 can support up to 4K 120P and 2K 180P.

Additionally, the C50 features the XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S recording codecs. These formats feature an easy-to-manage naming system and folder structure, while recording in the familiar MP4 format and preserving metadata.

High Frame Rate Recording with Auto Focus and Subject Detection

The camera’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II enables you to keep your subject in focus during slow or fast shooting at speeds up to 4K/120P or 2K/150P. This will help to ensure that even at high frame rates, your subject will remain in clear focus.

Simultaneous Crop Recording

When shooting for social media, an added benefit of the camera is that it allows for simultaneous crop recording when shooting in 4K DCI or UHD, allowing you to record at your chosen aspect ratio while also recording a cropped portion of the frame in 2K. When shooting in simultaneous crop mode, you have up to three format options, depending on your shooting mode: 9:17, 9:16, or 1:1. This will help to reduce turnaround time when formatting videos for different deliverables.

Dual Card Slots

CFexpress (type B) and SD card slots on the EOS C50 allow for simultaneous recording even when shooting RAW. All recording options are recorded to the camera’s CFexpress slot with sub-recording and proxy options available on the SD card slot.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

The EOS C50 supports the next generation of Canon’s acclaimed Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II. The camera’s sensor provides superb light-capturing efficiency, widening the area of the sensor that can be used for AF to approximately 100% by 100%.

The subject detection algorithm utilizes deep learning technology. The face/eye detection can now be set with either left or right eye priority in both humans and animals. Additionally, the animal detection AF now also includes birds.

Note: Animal detection may not be possible with some animals. Subjects that are not dogs or cats may not be detected as animals in some cases.

Vertical Shooting UI

When shooting vertically, the display on the EOS C50 can be switched to a UI that supports vertical shooting. It also supports touch controls for recording start/stop from the vertical screen mode.

Along with the shooting UI, menu settings and LCD brightness adjustments are also reoriented for vertical shooting to provide an easy-to-read layout.

Light and Compact Body Design Including Detachable Handle with Built-in XLR Inputs,REC and Zoom Control

The EOS C50 is the smallest and lightest Cinema EOS camera to date. The light and compact body makes shooting in tight spaces easier with greater freedom in angles and movement, and it reduces fatigue even during long hand-held shots.

Thanks to its flat and linear design with few protruding parts, you can easily attach a mic, rig, gimbal, or other accessories to customize the camera in multiple ways to fit your shooting style.

The included handle unit can also be attached to shoot subjects from a low or crooked angle, enabling more diverse and flexible visual capabilities. The handle also contains two built-in, full-sized 3-pin XLR inputs with 48V phantom power to record high-quality audio with an external mic. Additionally, the handle comes with a start/stop button and a zoom rocker.

Ethernet, and Wi-Fi Control

The built-in Wi-Fi® enables Canon's IP-based remote control XC Protocol. Compatible third-party USB-to-Ethernet adapters will also provide additional options for connectivity.

XC Protocol maximizes operability and remote control of camera settings. Using the XC Protocol, the camera can be operated by Canon’s RC-IP1000 and RC-IP100 controllers (sold separately), and XC Protocol-enabled third-party remote control panels (RCP) can remotely shade the camera.

Additionally, Canon’s Remote Control Camera Application and Multi-Camera Control App can control camera settings as well as multiple cameras. The camera also features SRT protocol, enabling IP streaming of video and audio.

Adobe Frame.io Camera-to-Cloud Integration

The camera has native compatibility with Frame.io’s Camera-to-Cloud (C2C) technology. This feature enables you to send proxy files immediately after recording internally, directly from the camera, for a faster and more secure path from production to post. The efficient proxy files don’t require additional processing or conversion, and are available to view, share, and edit remotely between teams in different locations.

Virtual Production Support

The EOS C50 is able to output CV Protocol to multiple devices for virtual productions. Lens metadata can be utilized by running our CV Metadata Extraction plugin on compatible computers, greatly enhancing usability in virtual set environments.

Mount Adapter PL-RF with Cooke/i® Technology Compatibility

The Mount Adapter PL-RF unlocks a broad assortment of PL mount lenses for the EOS C50 camera. The adapter is compatible with Cooke/i Technology’s metadata protocol which enables real-time output of lens metadata (focus/zoom/iris position, and other data in addition to lens model information). Additionally, the robust adapter features locking plates that attach to the camera with four screws for a secure and stable lens mount.

Full-featured Mirrorless Photo Mode with Dedicated Menu and UI

With a flip of the switch, the EOS C50 transforms from a powerful cinema camera to a professional-class stills camera, utilizing the familiar menu system of the EOS R series. Meeting both needs with a single camera saves you the hassle of having to carry two cameras and makes editing processes smoother, helping to streamline your workflow. The full-frame sensor offers a shallow depth of field that enables impressive shots that fully utilize bokeh, and shots can be taken with standard ISO of up to 64,000, enabling high-quality images for a wide range of shooting situations and subjects.

  • 35mm full-frame up to approx. 32MP
  • Max. 40 shots/sec. high-speed continuous shooting

Focusing systems
Dual Pixel CMOS AF(CMOS AF)
CMOS AF detection range
- When detecting the entire area and subject, approx. 100% (Vertical) x approx. 100% (Horizontal).
- Otherwise approx. 100% (Vertical) x approx. 90% (Horizontal)
- May be approx. 100% (Vertical) x approx. 80% (Horizontal), approx. 75% (Vertical) x approx. 40% (Horizontal) depending on the lens
AF Modes
Applies when the AF/MF switch of an RF lens is set to AF.
- Continuous AF
Used to keep continuously focused on a subject.
- One-Shot AF
AF is performed only while the assignable button assigned to One-Shot AF is pressed. No further lens movement is permitted after focusing. Releasing the assignable button resumes continuous AF if it is enabled. When [Lens action if cannot AF] is set to [Stop] in Continuous AF mode, stop the search when distance measurement is not possible.
AF Area
Small Zone: Video display range approx. 14.7% (Vertical) x 12.2% (Horizontal)
Flexible Zone 1: Video display range approx. 38% (Vertical) x 26% (Horizontal)

AF Speed
With compatible lenses, the lens drive speed is configurable.
Subject to Detect
Detects the eyes, face, head, or body of people or the eyes, face, or body of animals, as set in the menu. Setting to [People] targets human subjects for detection. Momentary inability to detect eyes / face / head will cause the camera to prioritize bodies (and when these parts can be detected again, they take precedence). Setting to [Animals] targets both animals and people for detection, and if both are detected, animals are given precedence. In scenes that include multiple subjects for detection, the most fitting main subject for detection results and how the shot is composed is automatically selected. Setting to [People] with autofocus active displays a white frame on the main subject and gray frames on all other subjects detected. Setting to [Animals] only displays a white frame on the main subject out of all animals and people detected.
Subject Detection AF
Controls how AF operation changes, based on the menu setting, if targeted subjects are not detected. Setting to [Detect. Priority] performs AF for any detected main subjects set in [Subject to Detect], or if none are detected, in the specified AF area.

Setting to [Detect. Only] performs continuous AF restricted to main subjects set in [Subject to Detect]. The camera keeps focusing on the last detected position of any subjects that become undetectable. Continuous AF resumes when subjects are once again detected.
Subject-Switching Sensitivity
Enables adjustment of how readily the camera switches focus from one main subject to another. Set in a range of 1–5. [1] makes the camera less likely to switch subjects, and [5] makes switching easier.
Eye Detection
Determines which eye is given precedence when two eyes are detected, as set in the menu.

Setting to [Auto] targets the eye closest to the camera. If both eyes are the same distance away, the camera targets the eye closer to the center of the configured AF area. Setting to [Right Eye Priority] gives the subject’s right eye precedence. Setting to [Left Eye Priority] gives the subject’s left eye precedence.
Tracking
The main subject can be selected for tracking with the joystick or touch panel.

Setting the AF area to [Whole Area] AF enables main subject tracking by pressing the joystick in when the camera detects the target subject set in [Subject to Detect]. The joystick can also be pressed left or right to track specific subjects if multiple subjects are detected. Subjects other than those targeted for detection can also be tracked by tapping them. Additionally, regardless of the configured AF area, any preferred subject can be tracked by tapping it or pressing the joystick after using it to move the marker, once the camera is set to tracking selection mode by pressing the assignable button assigned to tracking.
Tracking by Touch Priority
Enables touch-based tracking of any subject regardless of the configured AF area.
Track after Focusing
Enables main subjects targeted for AF to be switched with the focusing ring, when Continuous AF is enabled and this function is set to [On (Tracking Frame)] in the menu. As the focusing ring is turned, based on the focus position, an orange tracking frame is displayed on a potential subject that users can switch to, and when manual focusing stops, the potential subject by the tracking frame is tracked as the main subject. Whether or not to display tracking frames for potential subjects can be set from the menu. Without a subject in focus, no tracking frame is displayed, and the camera does not switch subjects after manual focusing. Disabling the function in the menu disables this tracking after focusing.

Exposure Control

Exposure Control Modes
Manual: Manual setting using shutter, iris, ISO/Gain, and ND filter.
Push Auto Iris*: While the Push Auto Iris button is pressed, the aperture is controlled to achieve proper exposure. If deviation from the proper exposure occurs, it takes control again.
Auto Iris*: Constantly adjusts automatically for proper exposure using iris.
Auto ISO/Gain*: Constantly adjusts automatically for proper exposure using ISO/Gain.
Auto Shutter*: Constantly adjusts automatically for proper exposure using Shutter.
Other:
- AE Response can be changed in the menu.
- Auto ISO/Gain can be used in combination with Auto Iris or Push Auto Iris.
* Not available at recording frame rates higher than 150P in Slow & Fast Motion recording.
Metering Modes
