Totally New Image Sensor

Even though the pixel count is the same as the EOS R5 camera body, this is a completely new 45MP sensor design with a redesigned architecture. This new full-frame sensor is stacked and back-illuminated allowing for incredible electronic shutter performance of 30 fps in RAW, JPEG or HEIF format.

DIGIC Accelerator and DIGIC X Image ProcessorDIGIC Accelerator and DIGIC X Image Processor

DIGIC Accelerator

The DIGIC Accelerator processor is a completely new front-engine processor, developed by Canon to supplement the powerful DIGIC X image processor. The DIGIC Accelerator handles the processing that makes many of the new features of this camera possible, allowing the DIGIC X image processor to focus solely on image processing. Together they combine for high-precision focusing, with incredible speed at high-image quality.

Faster Readout Speed

The faster readout speed of the back illuminated and stacked full-frame CMOS image sensor in the EOS R5 Mark II, has reduced the rolling shutter distortion by about 60% compared to the previous EOS R5 camera body. From photos of high-speed moving subjects in sports, to impressive video we’re excited to see what you create with the EOS R5 Mark II.

Dual Pixel Intelligent AF

Autofocus has been significantly upgraded on the EOS R5 Mark II with features like subject tracking which it shares with the new flagship EOS R1. The new Dual Pixel Intelligent AF subject tracking allows you to maintain focus on a subject even when they are obscured briefly while shooting. And, for even faster positioning of your active AF Area, the EOS R5 Mark II adds Canon’s Eye Control AF - which is even more advanced than the Eye Control in the EOS R3 camera.

Once you calibrate the viewfinder to your eye, just look where you want to focus, and the AF Area will move there when you press the AF activation button. This new system is even robust enough for many users to work when the photographer is wearing glasses. Many users will find that this is the fastest and most effortless way to move your autofocus point.

Versatile Shutter Modes and Drive Speeds

The EOS R5 Mark II is equipped with a stacked, back-illuminated image sensor capable of 30fps capture of 14bit RAW imagery in Electronic Shutter. For users that wish for lower than 30fps drive speed, the EOS R5 Mark II offers a wide range of choices for H+, H and L modes. Additionally, through use of Customized buttons, the drive speed can be programmed to increase or decrease the drive speed during shooting by pressing a button. A Mechanical shutter, and Electronic first curtain shutter mode are also available allowing for 12fps continuous shooting for even more versatility.

Powerful Continuous and Pre-Continuous Shooting

EOS R5 Mark II features up to 30fps continuous shooting speed supporting JPEG, RAW, and HEIF image formats and when Pre-Continuous Shooting is enabled, pressing the shutter button halfway will start the pre-shooting process, when you fully depress the shutter, the previous 1/2 -second of images will be written to the memory card (so up to 20 if you are shooting at 40 fps), and will continue capturing images until you release the shutter button.

Sync Speed Priority

EOS R5 Mark II now features Sync Speed priority for flash photographers looking for faster flash sync speeds with select Canon Speedlite flashes such as Speedlite 430EX III / 470EX-AI / 600 EX II-RT / EL-100 / EL-1 / EL-5 / EL-10 and Macro Ring Lite MR14-EX II / Macro Twin Lite MT-26EX-RT. With use of these products, in Electronic First Curtain Shutter mode a 1/320th sec. sync speed is possible at full-frame and 1/400th sec. sync speed is possible in 1.6x crop mode. In Electronic Shutter mode, 1/200th sec. sync speed is possible at full-frame resolution, and 1/320th sec. sync speed is possible in 1.6x crop mode.

Focus Bracketing with Flash and Depth Compositing

The EOS R5 Mark II becomes an even more powerful tool for macro and product photographers looking for immense detail. With a single press of the shutter button, the camera can automatically take a series of photos at different focus distances. The camera then performs depth compositing to generate an image that is clearly in focus from the foreground to background from the source images. This is useful in macro photography where depth of field is often shallow, or where a drop in image quality due to diffraction caused by a narrow aperture is a concern.

DIGIC AcceleratorDIGIC Accelerator

DIGIC Accelerator

The DIGIC Accelerator chip is a completely new processor developed by Canon to supplement the power of the proven DIGIC X processor.

Incredible Processing Speed

The DIGIC Accelerator processes large volumes of data directly from the image sensor giving you incredible improvements in your imaging performance. Not only does the DIGIC Accelerator provide you with high-speed and highly-accurate AF detection, but it also enables more precise metering calculations using 6144 zone metering – 16x the number of zones as EOS R5 and EOS R3.  This means better exposure calculations and improved white balance accuracy for your photos and videos.

In-Camera Upscaling

The DIGIC Accelerator chip also has a useful in-camera upscaling feature that uses deep learning to double the horizontal and vertical size of a JPEG on your card (leaving the original image untouched) in about 10 seconds. That means you can upscale a 45 Megapixel image to 179 Megapixel right in the camera.

Neural Network Noise Reduction

In the in-camera RAW processing menu of EOS R5 Mark II the new Neural Network Noise Reduction is now possible allowing for clearer imagery with detail to be produced with greater noise reduction capability to increase your image quality – without the need for a computer, or special software.

Blur / Out-of-Focus Image Detection

Thanks to the new image sensor, and the addition of the new Accelerated Capture system, the EOS R5 Mark II is capable of capturing up to 30 fps of RAW, JPEG, or HEIF (HDR-PQ) images using Electronic Shutter.  With the combination of a high-speed drive frame rate, and the impressive autofocus system in EOS R5 Mark II, the amount of keeper images will be sure to rise. So, when taking JPEG photos of people in Electronic Shutter mode, when the Blur / Out-of-Focus image detection function is enabled, the camera can evaluate and calculate the degree of blur in the detection frame of the main subject, and it adds the result to the EXIF information of the image file. A detection frame and Blur / Out-of-Focus icon is then be displayed during playback to judge the files for the user to speed up culling. It's also possible to customize the playback controls for image jump using the main dial to only see these images "with less blur". This filtering functionality is additionally available in Digital Photo Professional allowing users to cull on their computer."

Autofocus

Precision Subject Detection and Autofocus

The EOS R5 Mark II features an extensive range of detectable subjects for a variety of different situations. With People Detection, the eyes, face, head, upper torso, or full body can all be detected whether it be a portrait of a bride at a wedding, or a soccer player running directly at the goal. When Subject to detect is set to Animal Detection, the eyes, face, or the entire body of cats, dogs, birds, and horses can all be effortlessly tracked so wildlife photography and videography of unpredictable wildlife or pets can be easier. When Vehicle is set in the subject to detect menu, motorsports cars and motorcycles, trains and aircraft can all be detected and an additional spot focusing mode allows the helmet of open race cars, or motorcycle riders to be focused on for additional precision. To make focusing even easier an AUTO subject Detection mode is now available in the EOS R5 Mark II allowing the camera to automatically adjust the Subject Detection mode for you during shooting.

Register People Priority

With Register People priority enabled, simply by taking a photo of a person, the photographer or videographer can prioritize them as the registered subject when more than one face is detected in a scene. The camera then will tenaciously track these subjects across the scene regardless of when other subjects may be in the frame or even obscuring the subject.  Whether you’re photographing your next wedding or doing a video shoot on a gimbal stabilizer for a small business client, with Register People priority the camera will diligently work to prioritize focus on the subjects you want in focus.

Action Priority

Action priority setting is powered by the Accelerated Capture system. It is a new autofocus setting where in select sports, the camera can analyze and understand more information about the subject movements of players, and automatically move the AF point to a player performing a specific action based on their motion and body movements – such as taking a shot, passing a ball, and so on. With information such as face, head, eye, torso, and joint information of the main subject, and additionally other subjects within the scene at the same time, as well as the ball position information, the camera can tenaciously track the ball carrier, or subjects that are temporarily hidden as they move within the scene or when they make an important action such as shooting the ball. Additionally, the camera can better predict their actions and can recognize where to place the focus to capture moments that were not possible before to help ensure you get the action shot you want when the action is moving incredibly fast in front of you. Soccer, volleyball, and basketball are all supported currently.

Advanced Eye Control AF

For even faster positioning of your active AF Area, the EOS R5 Mark II adds Canon’s Eye Control AF  – which is now even more advanced than the Eye Control AF system found in the EOS R3 camera body. Once you calibrate the viewfinder to your eye, simply look where you want to focus, and only when you press the AF activation button the focus will move to that AF Area position. This new system is even robust enough to work when a user is wearing glasses, and if you operate the camera when wearing sunglasses, it's possible to add additional calibration.

Focus Preset

EOS R5 Mark II now features Focus Preset, a function that up until now has only been available on Canon super-telephoto lenses. Now preset focus positions can be assigned to any of the camera's buttons, or even the lens L.Fn button and used with all RF lenses that support AF. Even when a subject is not detected as desired, users can register a focus position at a predetermined location to prevent focus from moving to obstacles in the foreground or background. This is ideal for those difficult situations when shooting wildlife or sports where critical focus is imperative in high action situations.

Video for Creatives

The EOS R5 Mark II is built with strong video functionality for the creative imagemaker. This includes 8K 59.94p Canon Light RAW internal recording in 12bit colour and up to 8K 29.97p recording in MP4. In 4K, up to 119.8p with audio is available. At Full HD, and 2K DCI resolutions, frame rates up to 239.8p with audio are also possible. Additionally, a new 4K resolution S RAW format has been added for greater range of tonality at 4K resolutions. “Fine” recording options are also available to record oversampled video, for even greater sharpness and detail.

Users now have the choice of several recording formats, EOS R5 Mark II supports 8K Canon RAW Movie, and new to Canon EOS R5 Mark II is the Canon Light RAW format – which is ideal for users seeking the extensive tonal range of RAW, but who are mindful of the storage implications of RAW recording. If 8K resolution is not needed, there’s also now an S-RAW setting for 12-bit 4K RAW movie recording for even greater range of tonality at 4K resolutions. For this user RAW + Proxy recording is supported for convenient post-production workflows.

For users who desire to work with MP4 video files, XF-HEVC S, and XF-AVC S are now supported, these formats follow the Cinema EOS file name structure making it even easier to use the EOS R5 Mark II on productions where Cinema EOS cameras like the EOS C70 or EOS C400 may also be used. For these users working with MP4 files, there are now options for XF-AVC S in YCC420 8bit, and YCC422 10bit. In XF-HEVC S, options for YCC420 10bit, and YCC422 10bit are also available. New to EOS R5 Mark II there are now options for Intra recording at High Intra, Standard Intra, Light Intra, as well as Long GOP options in Standard, and Light Long GOP.

Pre-Recording for Video

Similar to Pre-Continuous shooting in photo mode, EOS R5 provides Pre-recording in video.  With this enabled the camera will record either 3-seconds, or 5-seconds before the [REC] button is pressed.  This is an ideal safety net for situations where the camera operator absolutely cannot miss the action of the moment.

* Note: Pre recording is not available in RAW movie recording, High-frame rate movie, Time-lapse Movie, or HDMI RAW output.

Connections for the Creative

Featuring a Full-size HDMI-A port, the EOS R5 Mark II is equipped with a professional interface for those that want to use external recorders, capture cards, and even reference displays on their productions.  The camera is also equipped with the Canon multi-function shoe – allowing connection to a variety of Canon accessories, including the Tascam CA-XLR2d-C XLR microphone adapter which provides phantom-power capable XLR inputs and access to LPCM 24bit/4CH audio support.   Additionally, a USB-C port which supports UVC and UAC for video calls and livestreaming over social media, 3.5mm Microphone, 3.5mm Headphone, PC Sync, and Canon N3 remote port are all available.

Longer Recording Times

The EOS R5 Mark II is built with great consideration of the recording times needed for today’s creative imagemakers who desire a durable, and dust and water-resistant camera body. The R5 Mark II is built with a magnesium alloy chassis that transfers heat to the body, and a heat-dissipating structure using graphite and aluminum to move heat away from the sensor and card slots. Additionally, there is a setting for control over the Auto power off temperature setting. Allowing the camera operator to choose a higher temperature tolerance where they may want additional recording time but will be directed to use a tripod to prevent discomfort from the high temperature of the body.

With all the enhancements, EOS R5 Mark II requires a little more power than previous EOS Mirrorless cameras, and therefore it ships with a new, higher amperage battery, the LP-E6P.

It is the same size and shape as previous LP-E6-series batteries but is easily distinguished from older models by featuring a white stripe and white Canon logo.

This new battery can be used in older Canon mirrorless and even DSLR cameras but will require a camera firmware update to do so. Canon LP-E6N and LP-E6NH battery packs can be used in the R5 Mark II camera, but with some significant limitations – especially Wi-Fi connection, and for video recording.  Continuous Drive speeds with mechanical or first-curtain electronic shutter will be reduced. This applies to any battery in any of the optional battery grips as well.

Wireless Connectivity for the Everyday

The EOS R5 Mark II was built with the same extensive networking capability as the EOS R1 camera to provide communication capability for the most demanding professional photojournalists and networking specialists however, most photographers are not networking experts, so for these customers the EOS R5 Mark II provides powerful connectivity that is made simple and convenient including the ability to use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to connect to a smartphone or tablet to download photos and videos, or to control the camera through the Canon Camera Connect App. Tethered shooting support is additionally available to transfer files into a computer through the EOS Utility application. There is even the ability to upload to photos and videos to image.canon cloud service for auto forward support of Adobe Creative Cloud for Photoshop, Lightroom, and Frame.io users, as well as Flickr, Google Photos and even Google Drive accounts.

Wireless LogoWireless Logo

Wireless for the Professional Imagemaker

The EOS R5 Mark II networking functions are created with the support of the same functionality as the EOS R1 camera body to support professional imagemakers needing to deliver imagery to the reader as fast and as reliably as possible. It provides extensive networking speed and functionality including the support of 6 GHz, 5 GHz, and 2.4GHz bands, as well as MIMO technology (Multiple-input and multiple-output) to improve communication quality by incorporating multiple antennas, which is the first time it has been implemented as a built-in Wi-Fi function in a Canon camera.

Going Beyond Gigabit Speed with Ethernet Connectivity

Since many professional photographers work in wired network environments, the EOS R5 Mark II supports faster communication speed than was previously possible with previous cameras equipped with 1000BASE-T interfaces (1Gbps maximum theoretical value). When using the optional BG-R20EP or CF-E20EP Ethernet equipped grips, the new 2.5BASE-T IEEE802.3bz wired LAN interface supports communication at up to 2.5Gbps (maximum theoretical value) using a UTP RJ45 cable such as CAT5e or CAT6 cable.

Pro Wireless Functions and Security Support

Today's cameras used by photojournalists need to evolve with the capabilities of the network environment around the photographer, these imagemakers are often running around arenas, and stadiums and require high-speed and reliable connections, so the EOS R5 Mark II now supports the same automatic switching of access points as the EOS R5 Mark II, when the SSID of the same name, password, authentication and encryption in another location has a stronger radio signal than the camera is already connected to during FTP transfer. The camera supports FTP Multi-thread for two FTP connections established from the camera to an FTP server allowing for multiple files to be simultaneously transferred using each of the connections. Also, when using the optional BG-R20EP, or CF-R20EP grip with the EOS R5 Mark II it will automatically switch to wireless LAN if the wired LAN cable is disconnected during use, and it will switch to wired LAN automatically if a wired LAN cable is connected during wireless use. The camera supports higher level security including WPA-3-Enterprise 192-bit encryption algorithm strength, Enhanced Open by using the Opportunistic Wireless Encryption (OWE) encryption method.

Proven Durability

The EOS R5 Mark II builds on the legacy of the durable EOS 5-series that is trusted by critically demanding customers worldwide. It features a magnesium alloy chassis that is built to provide outstanding strength, robustness, heat dissipation with a light weight. The new EVF features a sealed structure, resisting environmental changes making it difficult to fog up, with anti-fog performance superior to even the EOS R3. Additionally, with a dust and water-resistant design it will provide confidence in harsh conditions, even when using one of the new optional grips which all feature the same level of sealing as the body.

Versatile Grips

The EOS R5 Mark II has three optional grips that provide additional battery power and exciting new functionality.

Battery Grip BG-R20

Allows for two LP-E6-series batteries and provides controls for vertical shooting, including an improved multi-controller position. The weight balance has been optimized for shooting vertically or with heavier large-aperture lenses.

Battery Grip BG-R20EP

Allows for two LP-E6-series batteries, provides vertical shooting controls, and includes a 2.5G Base-T high-speed ethernet port for fast-paced tethered shooting. This meets the needs of professionals who demand operability for vertical shooting and an Ethernet port for tethered shooting, FTP transfer and even livestreaming.

Cooling Fan CF-R20EP

Allows for two LP-E6 series batteries and provides a multi-speed fan to help keep the camera cool in challenging video production situations. This enables more than 120 minutes of movie recording at 8K 29.97p. It also features a 2.5G Base-T Ethernet port (high-speed data communications standard) for users who want a wired connection for tethered shooting, FTP transfer and even livestreaming.
